Woman Appointed Dean of University

A Saudi woman has been appointed dean at a university for the first time in the conservative Islamic kingdom, where women are still banned from driving.
A spokesman at the Arab Open University said Maha Abdullah Arkoubi was appointed dean of the university’s branch in the city of Jidda.
The appointment could be seen by academics as a gesture of liberalization after recent calls by Saudi intellectuals for political and social reform.
