Affordable, green in Boyle Heights

Pueblo del Sol, an affordable, mixed-income residential complex in Boyle Heights, opened its doors to 377 families last week.

The $103-million complex, with amenities that include a 6,500-square-foot community service center, swimming pool, exercise room, playgrounds and after-school and job-training programs, is on the former site of the run-down Aliso Village public housing project.

The development, which utilizes sustainable or “green” building principles, currently has 377 two-, three- and four-bedroom rental units in one-story flats and two-story townhomes for very-low-income to moderate-income families. Next spring, 93 single-family detached homes will be available for purchase, 27 of which will be earmarked for former public housing residents.

The project was created by the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, Related Companies of California, McCormack Baron Salazar, SunAmerica Affordable Housing Partners and Los Angeles Unified School District.
