Court wipes out Beach Boy claim

“Stop! in the name of Love.” That’s what the Supreme Court effectively told Beach Boy Al Jardine on Monday, putting an end to his years of efforts to win the right to use the Beach Boys’ name for his tours.
The court’s refusal to hear Jardine’s appeal leaves in place an earlier ruling that only singer Mike Love is entitled to use the group name.
The dispute has been in the courts since 1998. Jardine, one of the founding members of the band, had toured as “Beach Boys Family & Friends” and “Al Jardine of the Beach Boys.”
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in January that although Jardine is one of the owners of the company, Brother Records, which owns the rights to the Beach Boys name, Love is the only person licensed to use it. One of Jardine’s suits said Love has excluded him from Beach Boys performances.
