U.N. peacekeeping troops discovered 23 bodies in a village in Congo’s northeast, in what appeared to be the latest in a series of massacres of civilians, a spokeswoman said.

A local leader from the Hema ethnic group said the victims were Hema killed by the rival Lendu group. The U.N. spokeswoman said people at the scene south of the town of Bule told peacekeepers 32 more victims had been buried. The U.N. troops did not see those bodies.
