Trash Collectors Back at Bargaining Table
Striking trash collectors in Chicago returned to the bargaining table as thousands spent an eighth straight day on the picket lines, with city workers stepping in to clear out overflowing bins.
The two sides were joined by a federal mediator and negotiated for more than 14 hours Tuesday, said a Chicago Area Refuse Haulers Assn. spokesman. He said some progress was made but disagreements remained.
The 3,300 striking Teamsters handle garbage for private waste haulers in Chicago’s high-rise dwellings and in the suburbs.
