Witness to Alleged Police Abuse Slain
A man who spoke with a United Nations official about alleged police abuses in Brazil was gunned down in the city of Santo Antonio de Jesus, said Marina Castro, spokeswoman for the federal human rights office.
Gerson Jesus Bispo was killed a day after the U.N. official, Asma Jahangir, said that abuses by police forces, including torture and killings, were common in the vast South American country.
She had just finished a three-week fact-finding mission.
Bispo was the second witness reported killed. Flavio Manoel da Silva was slain Sept. 27 in Pedras de Fogo.
