Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revolutionized medicine be enabling doctors to see detailed images of the interior of the human body without the harmful radiation of X-rays and computed tomography, or CT scans. University of Illinois chemist Paul C. Lauterbur and British physicist Sir Peter Mansfield last week were awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for their roles in developing MRI.
