Steer Limbaugh Toward Narcotics Anonymous

In both “Now, a Real Drug Challenge” (editorial, Oct. 14) and Robert Scheer’s sympathetic though sarcastic “Rush to Revenge? No, Thanks” (Commentary, Oct. 14), a simple suggestion was missing. Suggest to Rush Limbaugh that he attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Hundreds of thousands of addicts have lost the obsession to use drugs and have gotten on with their lives through this simple spiritual, not religious, program. To not bring this information to the fore is an insult to recovering addicts who know what works and what doesn’t.

Mr. Scheer, you are far too kind. I used to think it was a good and decent thing to understand other people’s points of view, but years of enduring conservatives’ “my way or the highway” approach to everything has left me a bit less sympathetic. If you look at Limbaugh’s Web site you’ll see several articles sympathizing with poor Rush’s plight, and of course castigating liberals for picking on him. These are the same people, of course, whose normal response to anyone with a drug problem is to lock them up and throw away the key.

These right-wingers have zero compassion for anybody who doesn’t share their narrow point of view, and I got sick and tired of trying to be reasonable with them years ago.

There seem to be hundreds of confused, bewildered, frightened adult white males wandering the streets of Bakersfield since Limbaugh left his followers for another try at drug rehab. Hurry back, Rush. These poor souls need guidance.
