Nicer than the average dugout
L.A. Dodger Shawn Green has purchased a two-acre home site in Irvine, where he and his wife, Lindsay, plan to build an 8,000-square-foot Tuscan-style farmhouse.
The cost of the land, which is bordered by a nature preserve, was not disclosed, but sites of comparable size in the gated Shady Canyon community cost $2.5 million to $3 million. The 400-home golf course development is in the San Joaquin Hills.
Construction is expected to begin in mid-2004, with completion in late 2005. The community’s design review committee is studying the house plans.
The home is being designed as a compound that will appear to be hundreds of years old. Handcrafted stonework and rustic materials will be used extensively. There also will be a multilevel building by the swimming pool at a far end of the property that will have an outdoor kitchen and eating area, a cabana with fireplace, a guest suite and a game room that will house Green’s memorabilia.
“Parts of the home will be oriented to a canyon, and other parts will focus on a large yard where Shawn and his family will be able to play ball,” said Bob White of Laguna Beach-based Forrest Studio.
White is designing the home in collaboration with Ritner Architectural Group of Newport Beach. Pacific Design Estates of Costa Mesa is the builder.
Green, 30, joined the Dodgers in 2000. His career-best offensive season so far was in 2001, when he batted .297 with 49 home runs and 125 runs batted in. A two-time major league All-Star, the Dodger right fielder finished the 2003 season with a .280 batting average and a career high of 49 doubles, second in the National League despite playing with a painful right shoulder injury since spring training.
The left-handed power hitter began his major league career in 1993 with the Toronto Blue Jays, but he was raised in Orange County and graduated from Tustin High School.
In 2000, after Green signed a six-year, $84-million contract with the Dodgers, he bought and sold a home in Pacific Palisades for nearly $4 million, and he purchased a three-bedroom, 3,500-square-foot house in Newport Beach for about its asking price of $1.8 million.
Quick turnaround for Malibu couple
Actress Victoria Principal and her husband, Dr. Harry Glassman, purchased a Malibu home in August for its $8.75-million asking price, and they already have put it back on the market, this time at $9.2 million. The 4,300-square-foot Cape Cod-style home has five bedrooms, a detached two-bedroom guesthouse, an oceanfront patio and a spa. The home was built in 1930 but was recently refurbished.
Principal, in her 50s, was a regular on the TV series “Dallas” (1978-87) and “Titans” (2000). She created a line of skin-care products and has written several self-help books. Glassman is a plastic surgeon.
Sound investment in Holmby Hills
Grammy-winning recording producer-composer-singer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and his wife, Tracey, have listed their Holmby Hills home of four-plus years at $29 million.
The house, on 2 1/2 acres, has six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in about 20,000 square feet. The Palladian villa, built in 1990, was completely refurbished in 2000.
Among its other features are two guesthouses, a tennis court, a cabana, a library, a sound studio, a theater, a projection room, a wine cellar, a beauty salon and a 600-foot-long driveway.
The producer-composer, 45, has written songs for Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Madonna and has created 100-plus R&B; and pop hits. The couple co-produced the movie “Soul Food” (1997) and the Showtime series of the same title.

Manhattan Beach sale is their goal
Felix Potvin, the L.A. Kings goalie who will play for the Boston Bruins this year as an unrestricted free agent, and his wife, Sabrina, have listed their Manhattan Beach home at just under $1.9 million.
The Mediterranean-style house, built in 2000, has six bedrooms plus a game room in about 5,000 square feet. It also has a pool, spa, waterfalls and a barbecue area. Inside are a wine bar and mahogany floors. The bedroom suite has a two-sided fireplace.
Potvin, 32, was with the Kings from 2001 until July 1. The Bruins signed him in September. He will be making less than his base salary last year of $3.5 million but has the opportunity to recoup most of it with incentives.
He was formerly a goalie with the Vancouver Canucks, the N.Y. Islanders and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The winner of Canada’s 1990-91 Goaltender of the Year Award is from Quebec.

They’re anchoring in Santa Monica
Lisa Breckenridge, entertainment and lifestyle anchor on the KTTV Fox 11 Morning News, has sold a condominium in West Los Angeles for just under $500,000, and she and her husband, ICM agent Andy Cohen, have purchased a Santa Monica home for slightly more than $1.3 million. The couple married a few weeks ago.
They bought a traditional-style house, built in the 1950s, with three bedrooms in 2,400 square feet. The house, in Santa Monica Canyon, has a large master suite with a sitting room.
Breckenridge, who also routinely fills in on “Good Day L.A.,” sold a two-bedroom, 1,600-square-foot condo with a wood-burning fireplace and a kitchen with granite counters. The 31-unit complex was built in 1991.
Joyce Essex and Danny Harvey of Coldwell Banker, Beverly Hills, had the listing on the condo and represented the couple in buying their new home.
A model property sold in the hills
Model-turned-actress Angie Everhart has sold her Hollywood Hills home. It was listed in January at just under $2 million.
Everhart had owned the home since June 1996, when she paid nearly $1.2 million for it. She bought the house from Elton John’s songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin.
The house has five bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,100 square feet. The home, on a promontory with city views, also has a pool plus a master bedroom with a fireplace.
Everhart, in her early 30s, made her acting debut in the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring movie “Last Action Hero” (1993). She appears in the film “The Dead Hollywood Moms Society,” due out in 2004.
