A 40-year-old San Rafael man drowned over the weekend while scuba diving off Anacapa Island, authorities said Sunday.

Nicholas Armington had ascended from his fourth dive of the day about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when he signaled to people on the dive boat that he had a problem, authorities said.

When divers from the boat reached him in the water, Armington was unresponsive.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies who were conducting scuba training nearby performed CPR on Armington while transporting him to Channel Islands Harbor, where he was pronounced dead.

Armington had been diving with a friend and other divers who had traveled to the island on the Spector boat out of Ventura Harbor, authorities said. He was an experienced diver who had descended Saturday to recreational levels of less than 30 feet, authorities said.
