From Times Wire Reports

The Chicago Department of Health is offering free inoculations against bacterial meningitis to residents on the city’s North Side in response to a meningitis outbreak that has killed three people.

Dr. John Wilhelm, the city’s health commissioner, said laboratory test results have confirmed four of six meningitis cases reported so far were from a bacterial strain for which there is an effective vaccine. Bacterial meningitis is an infection that can be fatal if not treated with antibiotics. It is spread by direct contact with an infected person.
