Policeman Held in French Reporter’s Death

An Ivory Coast police officer was being held on accusations that he shot a French journalist in the head with an AK-47 as the man waited to interview jailed opposition figures in Abidjan.
French President Jacques Chirac, launching a tour of West Africa, condemned the killing of Jean Helene, a reporter for Radio France Internationale.
Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo called the killing “an ignoble murder” and said he had ordered a full investigation.
