27 German Soldiers Arrive in Northern City
A team of 27 German troops arrived in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz to pave the way for the first expansion of the NATO-led peacekeeping troops outside the capital.
U.S. Special Forces provided light security at the airfield, but the atmosphere was relaxed and the Germans were smiling as they unloaded equipment from their aircraft. By spring, about 450 German troops are expected to be deployed in Kunduz.
The U.N. Security Council this month approved expanding the peacekeepers’ mandate outside Kabul, where about 5,000 international troops are now based.
