UCLA writer takes 1st place

UCLA graduate student Paul J. da Silva won first prize in the Samuel Goldwyn Writing Awards for his Civil War-era script “Deep South.”
Da Silva’s screenplay was among more than 100 submitted from students at seven UC campuses.
Other winners were Tony Moton and Thor Challgren. Honorable mentions went to Marshall Thornton and Christian Guzek.
The awards include cash prizes ranging from $1,000 for honorable mentions to $10,000 for first place. Previous Goldwyn winners who went on to writing careers include Allison Anders, Francis Ford Coppola, Pamela Gray, Colin Higgins, Eric Roth and Jonathan Kellerman.
