Nine Afghan soldiers and policemen have been killed in Taliban guerrilla attacks, officials said, while the U.S. military announced a new assault to wipe out hundreds of militants.

Seven policemen were killed Sunday along the highway between Kabul and the southern city of Kandahar, and two soldiers were killed in Oruzgan province, officials said.

The deaths came a day after the U.S. began Operation Mountain Viper in the southern province of Zabol, Col. Rodney Davis said. He said U.S. soldiers and aircraft would help Afghans hunt for 1,000 Taliban fighters.
