Kurdish Rebels Call Off Cease-Fire
Kurdish rebels announced the end of their four-year cease-fire with Turkey because of Ankara’s failure to match the truce.
The Kurdistan Workers Party, also known as the PKK, launched its fight for an ethnic homeland in 1984. More than 30,000 people have died in the conflict, but violence died down after the 1999 capture of leader Abdullah Ocalan.
“It will be up to the Turkish government to make the decision for peace or war,” the Germany-based Mesopotamian news agency quoted the rebels as saying. Turkey, which regards the PKK as a terrorist force, has ruled out any talks with the group.
