North Korea’s parliament reelected leader Kim Jong Il as head of the nation’s 1.1-million-strong military.

Kim’s widely expected reelection as chairman of the National Defense Commission came amid international tension over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

Kim’s reelection to the nation’s highest post “marks a great event strikingly demonstrating the firm will and faith of [the nation] to resolutely meet all challenges of the imperialists and reactionaries,” said North Korea’s state-run news agency.
