Trojans’ Victory Is Quite Telling

Share

I told you so.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a letter to Viewpoint criticizing the preseason AP college football poll that ranked USC in eighth place. I wrote that the Trojans, who were loaded, should have been rated among the top five.

I pointed out that USC had the best college football team in the nation at the end of last season, when the Trojans routed Notre Dame, UCLA and Iowa (in the Orange Bowl).

My letter was not printed, but I just wanted to say that I told you so.

In his Sunday column, Bill Plaschke seemed to suggest that the rest of the Trojan schedule could be a cakewalk “with only one game remaining against a team in the preseason top 20.”

Hey, Bill, both Washington and Notre Dame are in the top 20 and a look only slightly further down reveals Arizona State with their super QB in the top 25. Add in Cal, which won big Saturday, after giving Kansas State a good game the week before, and now you have five predictably tough games (counting Auburn). And all of these games are on the road!

Far from a cakewalk. The Trojans have their work cut out for them. They will face much better quarterbacks in the Pac-10, meaning the offense has to be more productive. But I share Bill’s optimism.
