A Call to Re-Regulate Workers’ Comp

Share

“Lawmakers Seek Ways to Reform Workers’ Comp” (Aug. 27) says officials trace the problem to the removal of the minimum rate for workers’ insurance that occurred in the mid-1990s.

However, what happened then was the state’s laws were rewritten and essentially deregulated, allowing private insurers to charge what they would and cover whichever injured workers they chose.

This has resulted in premiums doubling and tripling for the workers’ compensation insurance the employers must pay.

There will be no solution to this problem until workers’ compensation is re-regulated and private insurance is removed so that the state can insure workers fairly and cheaply.

Capping treatment for injured workers will offer very little relief for employers when the problem is greedy insurance companies.
