Watchdog Reports 637 ‘Honor Killings’ in 2003
At least 631 women and six girls died in “honor killings” by their relatives in Pakistan in the first eight months of the year, researchers for a human rights group said.
The Madadgar group said about half the deaths were reported in the southern province of Sindh. Many more, in Baluchistan and North-West Frontier provinces, were believed to have gone unreported. Madadgar is run by a legal aid group and UNICEF.
The killings -- which are against Pakistani law -- are usually motivated by a woman having, or being suspected of having, sexual relations outside marriage. Often she is given no chance to defend herself.
