Estimates Put Toll From Heat Wave at 19,000
From Times Wire Reports
The heat wave that scorched Europe in August killed more than 19,000 people, according to official estimates in a dozen countries. The toll may go higher because Germany and Spain so far have attributed only a fraction of summer fatalities to heat.
France reported a toll of 14,802. Scientists reached the figure by counting the number of deaths above what would be expected for August.
No comprehensive Europe-wide toll exists, and nations are using different measures to determine heat-related deaths.
