Friedkin said to be L.A. bound

Hollywood directors, it seems, just can’t wait for institutional approval. In an interview in Opera News magazine, Academy Award winner William Friedkin (“The French Connection”) has announced plans to direct Wagner’s “Tannhauser” for Los Angeles Opera during the 2004-05 season.

Officials at the company won’t confirm that, however. Nor will they confirm that Garry Marshall will direct Offenbach’s “The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein” for them too, although Marshall is widely saying so.

Friedkin directed L.A. Opera’s effective pairing of Bartok’s “Duke Bluebeard’s Castle” and Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” last year.
