The dates for the 2004 Point Mugu Air Show have been changed to Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19, officials announced Thursday.

The air show had been scheduled for a week earlier, but those dates conflicted with operations at the base’s Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, said Vance Vasquez, spokesman for Naval Base Ventura County.

This year’s event will not feature big-name aerobatic acts such as the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels, which had already been booked to appear at air shows in Asia and Nova Scotia. However, Vasquez said negotiations were underway with a civilian aerobatic team called the Patriots that flies Russian air force jets.

The air show will feature displays and demonstrations that will include F-14 Tomcat fighter jets and the E-2C Hawkeye radar plane, officials said.

This year’s show will be the first at Point Mugu since a fatal air crash in 2002 involving a QF-4 Phantom. Navy investigators concluded that pilot error had caused the accident.

The event was not held in 2003 because organizers were unable to book a precision jet team. In the past, attendance has ranged from 100,000 to about 240,000 over three days, rather than two days.
