To start: a sample of tastes, a mix of hip music stores.

Dilated Peoples is so very L.A. The rap trio came up out of the city’s progressive underground scene, and “Neighborhood Watch,” their just-released third album, is all about the city, from “World on Wheels,” inspired by the midcity roller rink, to “1580,” a bit about a local AM radio station. Laying the beats beneath it all is DJ Babu, who, like his MC-ing partners Rakaa and Evidence, comes from Los Angeles. And on the weekends, he knows how to enjoy it.

Dinner and a movie

Friday night, I eat at my favorite restaurant, Woo Lae Oak, the Korean barbecue on La Cienega. I love that place, from the appetizers to the desserts and everything in between. It’s pretty fly. It’s somewhat traditional Korean style food, but it had a definite new-school twist to it in terms of style. It’s cook-at-your-table, and everything that comes out of the kitchen is delicious.

After that, I’d probably catch a movie at the ArcLight. It’s a little more expensive that going to an Edwards or whatever, but I think it’s the best way to experience a movie that you really like. If you know you love a movie already, it’s worth going to see it again at ArcLight. The screen is so huge and the sound is incredible. There’s no line, no waiting, reserved seats, gourmet hot dogs and popcorn. You can have a glass of wine while you’re watching your movie. And they don’t just play the blockbuster hits. They play other films -- other cutting-edge type stuff.

Record shopping

Saturday, I have to do record shopping, and I’ll probably wind up at Amoeba. Obviously, being a DJ and producer, I need new records and old records and that’s a great spot to go dig. I could spend the majority of a Saturday in Amoeba if the bank account would let me. They also have DVDs, and I can plug up some holes in the collection.

I’ll also go to this place I used to work, Fat Beats. It’s geared more toward the hip-hop kids, so it’s a great place to keep up with the new wax, from jiggy hip-hop to the most obscure stuff.

All about the music

I’d probably pass by Versailles on Venice -- that’s the good one -- for Cuban food. I have to order a plate of the garlic chicken and plantains and black beans and rice. I’d have a late lunch there.

The Root Down at Gabah -- that’s what I’d do on Saturday night, check out what’s happening over there. It’s a nice, organic scene that’s been built up over a few years’ time. I’ve got a friend who runs it, DJ Dusk, but all the regulars over there keep the selection nice and different. It’s just about playing that good music, not it being new or old music. You’re going to hear everything over there.

Venice Beach scene

Venice Beach is definitely a nice place to hang out on Sunday if the weather is good. I like the scene and vibe -- I’m not a real beach person. Venice is kind of rough, but it’s a beautiful mix of people of all sizes, races and creeds.
