Trojan Defense Wins Day

USC did not exactly finish spring practice in style.

With a depleted running back corps and limited participation by quarterback Matt Leinart, the Trojan offense had seven turnovers and failed to score a touchdown during a 118-play scrimmage Saturday.

“You can’t judge spring on one day,” said Leinart, who completed eight of 15 passes for 88 yards before retiring to rest a sore left elbow.

Overall, USC’s spring workouts produced positive developments for a team that is expected to begin the 2004 season ranked in the top five, and possibly No. 1, in several polls.

Several players parlayed opportunities into probable starting roles or significant playing time in the fall. An offensive line that could include four new starters began to take shape.

But on Saturday, Trojan defenders were credited with seven sacks. And when quarterbacks had time to throw, their errant or tipped passes often landed in the hands of cornerbacks and linebackers.

“Obviously, this was a defensive day from the start,” Coach Pete Carroll said.

Sophomore John David Booty, listed No. 2 on the depth chart, completed nine of 17 passes for 143 yards, but two of his passes were intercepted. Senior Brandon Hance completed 11 of 21 passes for 143 yards but threw three interceptions and lost a fumble.

“The back-up situation at quarterback is still a battle,” Carroll said. “It isn’t clear.... None of the guys were able to really take the offense down the field.”

Carroll and offensive coordinator Norm Chow said they are optimistic heading into fall training camp, which begins the first week of August. The Trojans begin their season Aug. 28 against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field near Washington, D.C.

“We’re going to be fine,” Chow said. “Now, whether we’re good enough to win the national championship or whatever, who knows? You’ve got to be lucky and stay healthy and all that.”

Leinart said his elbow problem was not serious and would improve with rest. “It’s not a big deal,” he said. “I’m sure it will be fine in the summer.... Carroll said running backs Hershel Dennis and Desmond Reed did not participate because of academic eligibility issues. Both players are expected to take summer school classes and be eligible for fall practice.
