Majority Should Not Decide on Gay Marriage

Share

Re “Acceptance of Gays Rises Among New Generation,” April 11: Most Americans oppose same-sex marriage. Whether or not most Americans oppose same-sex marriage as reported in a poll done by The Times is irrelevant when it comes to constitutional amendment protections for a minority.

The Constitution (whether state or federal) exists to protect the rights of all Americans. An amendment to discriminate would be contrary to the very essence of why the Constitution is there. The mayor of San Francisco was right in allowing gays and lesbians to marry. His decision was based on the Constitution and its purpose for being.
