USC Fundraiser to Assist Disabled Athletes
USC will award 12 scholarships to physically disabled athletes during its annual “Swim With Mike” fundraiser Saturday at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium. Celebrating its 24th year, the event provides scholarships that enable disabled students to attend college.
“Swim With Mike” began in 1981 as a way to raise funds for a specially equipped van for USC swimmer Mike Nyeholt, a three-time All-American who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. Nyeholt suggested the surplus money be donated to aid other disabled athletes hoping to continue their educations. The event has raised more than $4 million for 45 scholarships.
A swim clinic will include Olympians such as Lenny Krayzelburg, Janet Evans and John Naber, and the Gerald and Betty Ford People Helping People Award will be presented to Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete.
