What I’m Drinking

The Morning After

Ammo, 155 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood, $4

I’ve been doing a lot of “research” for this column, and while out for breakfast one recent morning realized the next drink I needed was not a cocktail but a remedy for the previous night’s consumption. I don’t believe in “hair of the dog,” so that option was out. But I saw the Morning After tonic (from Elixir on Melrose) offered at Ammo. Elixir’s herbalists formulated the stuff to rejuvenate kidney and adrenal functions, based on the principles of Chinese medicine. The mini-bottle of viscous, cherry-colored (and flavored) liquid was poured into a large glass of purified water and brought to the table. I was skeptical, but its various ingredients, from milk thistle and gynostemma to reishi mushroom and damiana, rehydrated my body and soothed my head, just as they were meant to. Of course for a few bucks more they’ll pour in a shot of vodka.
