Two Suspected Israeli Spies Are Arrested
Prime Minister Helen Clark said she had asked Israel to explain why two suspected Israeli spies allegedly tried to obtain a New Zealand passport for one of them.
Urie Zoshe Kelman, 30, and Eli Cara, 50, appeared in Auckland District Court and denied charges related to alleged attempts to obtain the passport. Both men were freed on bail.
Two other alleged members of Israel’s Mossad intelligence service are being sought by New Zealand, the court was told. Police said Zeev William Barkan, 37, had fled the country, and a fourth man was believed to be in New Zealand, but the others had refused to identify him.
