An Israeli art house cinema in Tel Aviv said Thursday it would screen Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” after commercial distributors in Israel decided not to handle the film.

“We see this as a chance to hold an educational discussion on the subject,” said Alon Garboz, director of Tel Aviv’s Cinematheque.

Jewish groups have said the film could foment anti-Semitism by depicting Jews as putting pressure on the Romans to crucify Jesus. Israeli distributors turned down the film because of the controversy and concern they would not recoup their investment.
