A five-day riot that killed at least nine inmates at a Brazilian prison in the state of Rondonia ended after authorities granted demands to expand the overcrowded facility and replace the prison director, authorities said.

Prison riots are common in Brazil, but this one was unusually shocking as inmates threw the mutilated corpses of rivals from the Urso Branco prison walls. They decapitated two of the dead men and hung their heads from the wall.

In a 2002 riot at the prison, 27 inmates died.
