Two Stakes at Churchill

Share

Two days before the Kentucky Derby, there will be a pair of stakes races at Churchill Downs.

Dyna Da Wyna, who has won five of her last six races for trainer Elliott Walden, heads a field of 11 fillies and mares in the $100,000 Mamzelle at five furlongs on the turf, then seven 3-year-old fillies will go 7 1/2 furlongs in the $100,000 La Troienne.

Dyna Da Wyna, a 4-year-old gray, began her career in Southern California with trainer Mike Machowsky before heading to Kentucky. Her victories since moving east include the Valley View, a Grade III at Keeneland, and the Stravinsky, also at Keeneland 12 days ago.

Pat Day will ride Dyna Da Wyna against Set To Sparkle, Nicole’s Dream, Big Score, Any For Love, Tangier Sound, Miss Penny Fortune, Ahuriri Hikawai, Repository, Lady Sabrina and Elusive Honey.

In the La Troienne, another Grade III, Day will ride Ender’s Sister, a daughter of A.P. Indy who has won four in a row for trainer George Arnold.

Race of the day: Ashoka, an impressive winner in his 2004 debut for trainer Bobby Frankel, will stretch to 1 1/4 miles in a $54,000 optional claimer on the turf, the fourth race at Hollywood Park. Corey Nakatani will ride the 4-year-old A.P. Indy colt.

The race is part of a pick six that will have a carry-over of $96,323.

One for the road: In the seventh at Churchill Downs, Powerful Touch shortens up around one turn in his second start for Frankel and can win for the third time in six tries in the $56,700 optional claimer. Alex Solis will be the jockey. In his first race for Frankel, Powerful Touch finished third, a length behind Beau Soleil, who won Saturday’s Tiznow at Hollywood Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Flamethrowintexan in the third, Ashoka in the fourth and all in the fifth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/16. Money: Previous day/meet total: $13/$88.40. Total money bet: $104.
