American scullcap has sedative effects

Share

American scullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) was used in Colonial times to treat rabies, fever and premenstrual syndrome. The herb is a tall-growing, blue-flowered member of the mint family that grows in woods and lush grasslands. American scullcap is different from European and Chinese scullcap, which have a different set of purported medicinal powers.

Uses: Today, American scullcap is used most often for insomnia, nervous tension, stress and anxiety.

Dose: Scullcap is available as a tincture and in capsule form; doses vary. To make scullcap tea, steep one to two teaspoons of the dried herb in hot water; drink three times a day.

Precautions: Scullcap can cause fatigue and may amplify the effects of other drugs with ingredients that induce drowsiness, such as diphenhydramine, an ingredient in many cough and cold medicines. Some preparations of the herb may be contaminated with germander, a similar-looking plant sometimes called pink scullcap. Germander causes severe liver damage with long-term use, so be sure to purchase scullcap products from a reputable source.

Research: There is no research to support claims that American scullcap can cure rabies or reduce fever. Studies have shown that the herb does have sedative effects.
