Work Done, Williams Waits

Mike Williams and USC began the waiting game Tuesday after the All-American receiver completed work for two summer-session classes that he hoped would bolster his chances of playing for the Trojans this season.

“That one part is over but it’s still ongoing I guess,” Williams said after participating in USC’s first scrimmage.

Williams left school in February, announced he was turning pro and hired an agent -- thereby forgoing his final two seasons of eligibility. Williams made his decision after a U.S. district judge ruled that the NFL’s mandate that a player must be three years removed from high school to be eligible for the draft was a violation of antitrust law. A federal appeals court issued a stay, and eventually reversed the original decision.

Williams severed professional ties with his agent, enrolled in summer classes at USC and has said that he has documented the return of all benefits he received.

USC has petitioned the NCAA for a progress-toward-degree waiver and reinstatement of Williams’ eligibility. The requests are treated separately by the NCAA and both must be granted for Williams to play college football again.

Williams said a school lawyer informed him that grades would not be posted until Monday at the earliest. The information will then be forwarded to the NCAA.

Offensive lineman Fred Matua (ankle), tight end Alex Holmes (calf) and several other projected starters didn’t participate in USC’s first scrimmage, which was lackluster compared to most practices during training camp. Running back Hershel Dennis gained 46 yards in 12 carries, and Coach Pete Carroll said he would return kickoffs this season. John David Booty passed for two touchdowns, Brandon Hance for one.
