Pakistan Captures 6 Suspects
Pakistan has captured five more alleged members of Al Qaeda in the last two days, along with a leader of a militant group accused in an attack on a Pakistani general, officials announced Thursday.
The arrests are the latest in a monthlong crackdown that has netted about 30 fugitives, including a Pakistani computer expert and a Tanzanian who was indicted in the deadly 1998 attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa. The embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania killed 224 people, including 12 Americans.
A senior official described the five suspects as “valuable targets” but refused to reveal their identities, nationalities or alleged roles within the Al Qaeda terrorist network.
Information Minister Sheik Rashid Ahmed confirmed the arrests but gave no details.
Also Thursday, police in the southern port city of Karachi arrested a man described as the No. 3 leader of a militant group.
The man was allegedly involved in a June 10 attack that narrowly missed the city’s top general, Lt. Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat. Eleven people were killed in the attack.
Rao Khalid, alias Haris, was captured on the outskirts of the city. He is the 10th suspect arrested in the attack.
