Authorities Crack Down on Democracy Activists

The Maldives declared a state of emergency, arrested about 100 democracy activists and used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters who staged a rare show of dissent in the Indian Ocean archipelago.
The declaration gives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom authority to suspend civil rights. The capital, Male, was under an indefinite curfew.
Demonstrators had gathered to protest the detentions of four people. Police freed the four before breaking up the crowd.
