Zanzibar Outlaws Gay Sex, Sets Prison Terms
Zanzibar, Tanzania’s semiautonomous archipelago, has banned gay sex and set prison terms of up to 25 years for those who break the law, officials said.
The penalty is 25 years for sex between men and seven years for sex between women. Local supporters of gay rights said the law was unfair, and some international human rights groups have condemned it as an infringement on personal liberty.
Zanzibar is overwhelmingly Muslim. Besides targeting gays, Islamic groups there have also pushed for bars to be removed from residential areas.
