In Defense of the Episcopal Bishop

As a lifelong Episcopalian I am saddened by the decision of two parishes to split from the U.S. Episcopal Church (“Parishes Split Off Over Gay Issues,” Aug. 18). In the over-500-year history of the Anglican Communion, we have constantly lived with tension and disagreement but were drawn together by our faith and the belief that revelation is progressive.

Our bishop believes that the church is large enough to include people who differ on certain issues, and who agree to differ until the fuller truth is revealed. This is “mainstream” and “orthodox” Anglicanism.

Eric Evans, quoted in the article, implies that the majority of Episcopalians are now living within a “pagan religion” and that our bishop is not “Bible-believing.” This is unfair and does not take into consideration the great pains Los Angeles Episcopal Bishop J. Jon Bruno has taken to seek reconciliation in this diocese.
