Eight companies, including U.S. Steel Corp. and DuPont Co., have agreed to pay $56 million to help clean up several miles of a polluted river near a rare habitat of sand dunes, prairie and swamp, officials said in Gary.

The deal over pollution in the Grand Calumet River, which flows into Lake Michigan, follows years of investigation by environmental regulators, Gov. Joe Kernan said.

“Not only will this settlement enhance the tireless efforts of community groups in northwest Indiana to restore this globally rare habitat, it also will strengthen the quality of life for generations to come,” he said.
