They’ll skip the tips -- and the cruise

Regarding “Nonrefundable and Mandatory -- Does It Still Qualify as a Tip?” [Travel Insider, Aug. 8]: Cruise-ship tipping policies shoved on passengers are upsetting. We have always tipped in cash over the last 15 years, usually to the cabin steward, table waiters and dining room assistant.

The new policy merely lowers labor costs for the cruise line and has nothing to do with convenience to passengers.

Add this new fee to the current multitude of additional charges and excessive shore excursion costs, and it is a loser for the public. It means an end to cruise travel for us as a matter of principle.
