Israel Plans to Add 500 Housing Units
Israel announced plans for 500 new housing units in the West Bank after an apparent U.S. policy shift that has infuriated Palestinians. The Palestinians oppose all Jewish settlement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, lands where they hope to establish a state.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wants to pull Israelis out of the Gaza Strip but strengthen settlements in the West Bank.
The United States, which supports the Gaza pullout, has signaled recently that it will not oppose construction inside existing West Bank settlements.
