Continuing Ire Over Abu Ghraib Scandal

Re “Prison Abuse Panel Faults Leaders,” Aug. 25: Former Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger, head of the panel investigating the Abu Ghraib prison abuses, harshly criticized Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the panel’s conclusion but then stated he should not resign because his departure would “be a boon to all America’s enemies.” This can be interpreted only one way: Getting rid of an incompetent secretary of Defense would help our enemies.

My guess is that in November the voters will not agree with Schlesinger that a forced departure of incompetent people would be a boon to all America’s enemies and will vote out the incompetent administration of President Bush.

Your Page 1 headline blurts “Prison Abuse Panel Faults Leaders.” The Page 8 continuation headline is “Senior Pentagon Leaders Criticized.” Yet in reading the small print on actual content of the report, one finds that interrogators and guards were “directly responsible” for the abuse and that although top officials and commanders were not focused on detention operations in Iraq, their errors do not warrant a call for resignation. The Times again demonstrates how the print media can skew a report for the reader who just scans the headlines.

The scandal of Abu Ghraib is that anyone would care what was done to those people. There comes a time when being “politically correct” is anything but, and that time is now.
