Bankruptcy Filings Decline Slightly

U.S. commercial and personal bankruptcy filings declined slightly in the year to June 30, the first decline in that 12-month period since 2000, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said.

Filings slipped to 1.64 million cases from 1.65 million in the year ended June 2003.

The record high for bankruptcy filings was 1.66 million cases during the 12-month period that ended Sept. 30 of last year.

Nonbusiness bankruptcy filings eased to 1.6 million in the year ended in June from 1.61 million the year before, while business filings slid to 35,739 from 37,182.
