Loud Blast Heard; Meteor May Be Cause
A large blast was heard in Jakarta early today and witnesses reported seeing an object with a tail of fire hurtling toward Earth. An astronomy expert speculated that it might have been a meteor.
The Indonesian air force radar detected an unidentified object falling to ground at a great speed before disappearing around the same time the noise was heard, a spokesman said.
Astronomer Muji Raharto of Bandung Institute of Technology in West Java province speculated that the object was a large meteor that exploded and then burned as it fell through the atmosphere.
