More Problems Likely With Trade Pacts

Share

Regarding “State Laws Take Back Seat to Trade,” Dec. 5:

Although often called treaties, these global pacts are only bills passed with simple majorities of the House and Senate. The problems concerning sovereignty mentioned in the story will only get worse with the coming vote on the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

The FTAA would expand the North American Free Trade Agreement to include all of the Latin American countries with the exception of Cuba.

Proponents also are saying that the FTAA would deepen NAFTA by claiming jurisdiction over an ever-increasing number of functions that have previously been under the control of national, state and local governments.
