They’re Not All Geeks

Share

I am a student at Harvey Mudd College, and while I recognize that a significant portion of the student body is represented by the descriptions in the article “Adam’s Excellent Adventure” (by Tracie White, Nov. 28), it is far from accurate to claim that they represent our school.

Like any other college, ours has its share of rowdy parties, athletes and, yes, binge drinking. It is also true that many students have a penchant for computers, science and engineering, and we share the same sleep-deprivation culture as other technical schools. A mention of the varied culture of our school beyond self-described computer geeks would have done some justice.

Thank you for the thoughtful and inspiring profile of Adam Field. However, none of the achievements and successes noted in the article “just happened.” Omitted or overlooked was any mention of the painful, difficult effort and the sacrifices expended by Field’s mother, which allowed him to reach the point of being sought after by prestigious universities.
