Perry Grant, 80; Prolific Writer-Producer for Dozens of Sitcoms

Perry Grant, 80, a longtime television writer-producer who wrote hundreds of scripts for more than 35 sitcoms, including “The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriett,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons,” “Good Times,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “The Odd Couple” and “Happy Days,” died Dec. 12 at his home in Pacific Palisades of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to his son, Rick.

A native of San Diego, Grant earned a bachelor’s degree at UCLA after serving in the Navy during World War II as an officer on a troop transport ship in the Pacific. While in the Navy, he wrote humor pieces for Collier’s and Liberty magazines.

After meeting his writing partner, Dick Bensfield, at a cocktail party, the duo began writing for the “The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet” in 1952. The Grant-Bensfield team worked together for 40 years.

Grant also created games, including Bash!, Whosit? and Smess.
