From Times Wire Reports

Vandals marred a popular landmark that President Jefferson called one of nature’s “most stupendous scenes,” defacing a famous slab of shale known as Jefferson Rock with oil-based paint.

The rock offers a sweeping view of where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

“It looks like the entire rock was dipped into paint,” said park Supt. Donald W. Campbell. No arrests had been made.
