“Seabiscuit,” the movie about the Depression-era racehorse with the reputation for come-from-behind victories, was a surprise winner at the American Society of Cinematographers’ awards gala Sunday night.

“Seabiscuit” cinematographer John Schwartzman took the prize for the year’s best camera work over rivals that included “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” which it will compete with for the best picture Oscar later this month.

Other winners in the ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel were Pierre Gill for the CBS movie “Hitler: The Rise of Evil” and Tami Reiker and Jeff Jur for separate episodes of the HBO series “Carnivale.”
