Protein Offers Quick Test for Heart Disease

A protein produced by overstressed heart muscle may be a strong indicator of heart disease, offering doctors a quick and inexpensive test for heart trouble before symptoms appear.

The substance, called B-type natriuretic peptide, could become the latest in an array of proteins that can be used to diagnose or predict heart trouble, two studies in today’s New England Journal of Medicine report.
